The State-by-State Property Tax at a Glance includes a series of narratives on property tax systems in the 50 states and the District of Columbia, published in conjunction with Significant Features of the Property Tax database. State property tax experts contributed to these narratives, which summarize highlights, key features, and history of state property tax systems, and provide valuable context for the companion visualization tool. Includes a U.S. overview, all 51 state profiles, contributor credits, and a glossary of property tax terms.

Frequent Data Updates

The State-by-State Property Tax at a Glance data will be updated annually and narratives will be updated periodically to reflect major state property tax developments.


Current state narratives feature recent developments through 2024. The visualization tool features 2022 data from Significant Features of the Property Tax and 2021 data from the U.S. Census Survey of State and Local Governments.
